strawberry morning I go out walking the fading of autumn reminds me of something losing our daylight to the blue of the evening why does it always remind me of something and why do I hide from it yet I’m drawn to it the comfort of laughter when we’re together why does it always remind me of someone the way that I miss you when I’m not with you why does it always remind me of something and why do I hide from it yet I’m drawn to it what is this ache that I feel in the pit of my soul I must need you more than I know a voice in the hallway calling my name why does it always remind me of something

people are tender though they might just seem hard our shields and protection guard our tender little hearts so seldom do we even see the fabric that we’re made of yeah we fumble for some simile it’s like we’re blind doing our make up and I’m always wanting to seem clever I wonder what that means I’m hiding have me check my humor at the door and make me swear that I’m not lying people are tender though they might just feel rough behind our cold wallllllllls is where we keep the soft stuff when life seems like it’s bent to break and when the heavens all are darkened when the sandbags can’t keep the flooding out when the rain starts raining hardest grab my hand and say “I love you babe— no flood or fire can keep us apart” we’ll run the stairs and lock the door and pray this house floats like an ark people are tender…

Joanna 02:45
Joanna, oh I really love you girl you’re such a sweet song in my mind Joanna, whatever you need from me I’ll be here walking right by your side but if you’re alone or if the raining makes you sad don’t forget to look where your eyes can’t see And if the sun won’t shine and if the music doesn’t rhyme keep on singing— you’re gonna find that harmony Joanna, oh I really love you girl you’re such a sweet song in my mind Joanna, some day you will leave from me but don’t you know I’ll be right there when you call if you’re alone or if the raining makes you sad don’t forget to look where your eyes can’t see and if the sun won’t shine and if the music doesn’t rhyme keep on singing— you’re gonna find that harmony

when it falls apart do you remember falling in falling into love with him? they say that love is blind or maybe it’s just youth never second-guessing you shouldn’t have to a breaking of the faith now you can’t tell what’s real with a cut this deep, how could it heal? don’t blame you for hiding don’t blame you for lying to yourself just to get through for a while and it feels like someone died but won’t leave you alone he left you in this house, but now where is home? you thought, maybe we’ll move cities maybe it was just a season a season we can leave behind don’t blame you for hiding don’t blame you for lying to yourself just to get through for a while it’s alright it’s alright well you can’t change what happened but you know you’ve still got me it’s alright, yeah it’s alright oh baby you fell running I’ll help you get up and keep going it’s alright, it’s alright it might feel like starting over but you know you’ve still got me it’s alright, yeah it’s alright you know i’m here with you when it falls apart do you remember falling in falling into love with him?
5.
see the rich in their houses gold trim around every door bite our lips in envy cause nobody wants to be poor yeah, nobody wants to be poor heard the poet and his lady are making love just to keep warm singing “all you need is love” but baby, nobody wants to be poor no no, nobody wants to be poor don’t measure your wealth in money or get caught up in the great decay if you’re folding or stacking I hear it all turns to dust some day I count my riches in a different way I can swim in the ocean hear my babies laugh from the shore whether you’re counting houses or love baby, nobody wants to be poor no, nobody wants to be poor
6.
Spring Creek 03:10
I’m getting out of town on Sunday I need to go where I can’t see or hear the sound of tires on the highway I’m gonna find me some clear water a cool place to rest from summer’s heat and remind me again that life is full of green but if you stay in the city don’t forget to feed your mind with something good I’m getting out of town on Sunday I need to breathe in deeply and watch the sway of trees that weren’t planted swimming upstream from river otters watch them dive down to the bottom and let them suggest to me that life is full of play Adam and Eve you and me were meant to care for the garden, east of Eden don’t wreck your mind on that infinite grind you’re meant for rest rest

===========================

the title Shade of Indigo came out of the song "Sombra del Añil". I wrote it falling asleep late one night, head lolling, strumming the guitar. Sometimes the dark of night can draw out the worst in me, in us... feelings of pain and loneliness, deep anxieties and fears. "though I walk through the valley of the shadow..."

this season of writing was one of remembering, of reminding myself. and the brooding dark that clouds over the earth, over my heart and attention, can be transformed through remembrance. "I will fear no evil, for you are with me..."

the night, can be seen as a grace, a shade, and the darkness as a shade of indigo.
